We wish to foster connection and build a relationship with our brethren in the Diaspora through a project that will commemorate the COVID-19 victims from various Jewish communities across the globe. To this end, we have built a promenade lined with olive trees, with each tree representing a Diaspora community. Visitors to the site can learn about the communities and members who succumbed to COVID by simply standing next to the tree and getting the story on a dedicated app via a QR code.
The location of the promenade is Kiryat Shmona, Israel’s most northernmost city, itself a symbol of Jewish strength and tenacity in the face of security and economic challenges.
"I am proud and gratified to have this opportunity to reach out to Diaspora communities and commemorate their COVID victims with the very first COVID memorial," says Kiryat Shmona Mayor Avihay Shtern.
A grand opening ceremony for the promenade is scheduled to take place on March 4, with the participation of the mayor, Rabbi Raanan, senior public figures, as well as Jewish Agency Chairman Isaac (Buji) Herzog.
“For a tree has hope; if it is cut it will again renew itself and its bough will not cease” (Book of Job, 14:7).
