AH’s Ear to the Ground to Hear the Faintest Requests
- Kibbutz Maaleh Gamla (Ramat HaGolan), 2 members (out of 150 members) approached AH for help. We met with them two weeks ago. They overwhelmed us with their heartfelt/desperate pleas for a place to daven. We have begun working to help them realize their dream.
- Kibbutz Meggido, Hashomer HaTzair, a few members approached us over a decade ago for help. Since then, AH has been holding Yom Kippur services and working with them on other aspects of Jewish life. Friday, 12-January 2018, moment before candle lighting, the Kibbutz voted to build the Synagogue by a nine- vote margin! 143 for and 134 against. They called Rav Raanan to share the good news shortly after Shabbos Rav Raanan met with them to begin mapping out the plans to build a Synagogue.

Tel Aviv Conference on The Power of Individuals to Reshape Society
AH attended a wonderful conference in Tel Aviv on how individuals can reshape society. Among the inspirational and moving speakers we heard:
- Rabbi Zvi Knoll who shared his story of building Kollelim and Batei Medrash. He told us how the members of Batei Medrash became Rabbis while learning there. These Rabbis then opened tens of Tel Aviv Synagogues. Over 500 Synagogues had been closed in the past 15 years. They took upon themselves not only reopen the Synagogues but to rebuild communities which had been completely neglected.
- Dovid Shub, an attorney, who shared his experience over the course of many years representing grocery store owners who petitioned the Supreme Court to keep their stores closed on Shabbos. “Whenever you hear the word ‘Shabbos’ in this context, you think of chareidi Jews, but that’s just not the case here,” Shub told The Jerusalem Post. “The petitioners are ordinary, hardworking secular Jews who just want to close their stores and rest on Saturdays.” His topic: “Why everybody truly benefits from Shabbos.” He addressed the “Supermarket Law” and explained how one individual or a handful of individuals can create the awareness of and importance of Shabbos all over Israel.
- Rabbi Mordechai Auerbach Schli’ta, son of Rav Shlomo Zalman ZT”L, has been the spiritual leader of Tel Aviv Synagogue for the past 40 years. His stories of building that community by linking Jew-to-Jew inspired us. He spoke about the importance of being a Jew and concluded that the definition of a Jew is that he deeply cares for others!
